Frequently Asked Questions

What is an SGO?

SGO stands for Scholarship Granting Organization. In 2021, the state of Ohio passed legislation that allows for the establishment of SGOs. SGOs are separate, tax exempt, 501(c)3 organizations. SGOs are established to collect donations on behalf of participating schools who want to provide scholarships to their eligible students.

Who Benefits from an SGO?

The program will strictly benefit families who cannot afford the full cost of a Mandel JDS education for their children. It will also offer taxpayers the ability to reduce their Ohio State tax liability.

What is the difference between tax liability, tax deduction and tax credit?

  • Tax liability is the total amount of tax debt that an individual, business, or other entity is legally obligated to pay to a government entity (in this case, the state of Ohio).
  • tax deduction is an expense or other item that you can subtract from your gross income to lower the amount of income subject to tax (not the case of an SGO donation).
  • tax credit is an amount of money that can be offset against a tax liability or reduces the amount of tax owed. This is what an SGO donation does.

What amount must I donate to an SGO?

There is no set amount. Donations can range anywhere from $1 to $750 per individual, depending upon your Ohio state tax liability. Couples who file their taxes jointly, may make one donation, up to $1,500, as long as BOTH names are listed on the donation. Every donation matters, whether it’s $18 or $1,500, you can make a difference in a Mandel JDS education scholarship!

Can I designate a specific student?

No, you may not designate a specific student, but you do designate a specific school. Please choose Joseph & Florence Mandel Jewish Day School when making your donation.

How do I make an SGO donation?

Through our partnership with Every Child, Every Family, a 501(c)3 SGO organization. Visit www.everychildeveryfamily.org/donate and fill out the online form. Remember to choose Joseph & Florence Mandel Jewish Day School to support our Mandel community.

Who can make an SGO donation?

Anybody who pays tax to the state of Ohio is eligible to donate to an SGO. Please tell your friends and family members who might be interested in supporting a Mandel Jewish Day School education to make an SGO donation too. They do not need to have a child enrolled to support Mandel JDS.

How will I get the tax credit on my OH taxes?

Once you make a donation, you will receive a letter/receipt. When you file your OH taxes, you can say you made an SGO donation to reduce your tax liability (taxes owed to OH), the letter/receipt is proof of that donation.
