SGO Tax Program
SUPPORT MANDEL JDS AT NO COST TO YOU!
For the second year in a row, Ohioans can receive a dollar-for-dollar credit when contributing to a designated tuition scholarship granting organization (SGO). We are one of those organizations! When you participate in this program, you will receive a 100% tax credit against your Ohio income tax liability, with a maximum credit of $750 per individual, or $1500 if you file "Married Filing Jointly."
This program is an easy way to support Mandel Jewish Day School at no cost to you!
It is also an opportunity that any eligible Ohio taxpayer can participate in, so please encourage your family and friends to support Mandel JDS as well.
*New this year, couples can make one $1500 transaction in both spouses names instead of 2 separate individual $750 transactions.

What is Ohio’s Scholarship Tax-Credit Program?
The Ohio General Assembly established a new program in 2021 whereby Ohioans can receive a 100% tax credit against Ohio income tax liability (what you owe in Ohio income tax) for cash contributions to certified organizations that grant scholarships to students. The maximum credit amount is $750 per person ($1,500 if married and filing jointly).
Who will benefit from this Scholarship Tax-Credit Program?
The program will benefit families who cannot afford the full cost of a Mandel JDS education for their children. It will also offer taxpayers the ability to reduce their Ohio state tax liability by making a contribution to the Mandel JDS Scholarship fund. This is a dollar-for-dollar tax credit against your tax liability, or the tax you owe to the State of Ohio.
Can I designate my payment to a specific student?
The fund does not accept contributions that are designated for specific students. It will go into a fund for general tuition assistance for all students who are applying to Mandel JDS and meet the need based criteria.
Does a spouse/partner have to make a separate gift to qualify for the $1500?
Yes. Your spouse or partner will need to make a separate gift, even if you file jointly. There is a max gift of $750 per person.
Who can contribute to the Mandel JDS Scholarship Fund?
Any Ohio taxpayer, single or married, who pays income tax to the State of Ohio.
Is the amount I claim considered a tax deduction?
Mandel JDS Scholarship fund donors will receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit up to $750 per person or $1,500 per couple, which is different from a tax deduction. Tax deductions reduce your taxable income. A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar credit against the taxes paid to the state of Ohio. The funds are directed to the Mandel JDS Scholarship Fund rather than to the state of Ohio.
How do I make a payment in order to participate in this program?
Through our partnership with the Ohio Association of Independent Schools (OAIS), we are able to execute this program. To make a gift to the Mandel JDS Scholarship Fund, you will need to select Joseph and Florence Mandel Jewish Day School as an option on the OAIS website and the dollars will be earmarked for the use of Mandel JDS tuition assistance.
How will I receive the money back?
Your contribution will be credited when you file your taxes. You will see this credit either in less money owed to the State of Ohio or will receive it back directly as an overpayment if you have already paid what you owe in full.
Is there a minimum contribution allowed?
There is no minimum. However, the maximum is $750 per individual or $1,500 per couple if filing jointly.
Please consult your personal accountant or financial advisor for individualized questions.
